The National Registration Bureau (NRB) on Wednesday, 4th February 2026, completed Phase One of the National Birth Registration Campaign (NBRC) in the five districts of Chitipa, Likoma, Dedza, Blantyre Rural, and Machinga.
Phase One of the campaign was implemented in the five districts for ten days, from 26th January to 4th February 2026, targeting about 1.1 million children.
As of Friday, 6th February 2026, records that had synchronized with the NRB Database were slightly over 970,400, representing about 88 percent registration of the targeted population.
The National Birth Registration Campaign is targeting about 8 million children to be registered and issued with Birth Certificates after registration.
NRB plans to implement seven phases of registration to cover the whole country and will announce the commencement of Phase Two very shortly.
Phase Two will target Lilongwe Rural West, Phalombe, Nkhatabay, and Chikwawa districts.
In the Phase One, NRB used about 2,000 registration staff, including teachers, to cover the five districts.
The exercise is being supported with funds from the Government of Malawi.
With the exercise, Malawi is among a few African countries destined to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Target 16.9. which encourages nations to provide legal identity for all, including birth registration, by 2030
