marriage registration
The marriage certificate is a legal document issued by the National Registration Bureau that provides a legal proof of registration of marriage according to the National Registration Act (2010)
1.CIVIL MARRIAGE REGISTRATION
A. NOTIFICATION
- Parties to the marriage apply for a notice to the marriage to the District Commissioner (DC) as per Marriage, Divorce and Family Relations Act (MDFRA).
- The DC verifies the particulars of the applicants using National ID or Resident Foreigner ID.
- The DC Displays the Notice of Marriage (Form B) for 21 days.
- In case of any caveats, the process will not proceed until they are resolved.
- The DC issues a Marriage Permit (Form D) after the expiry of 21 days.
B. REGISTRATION
- The couple completes Marriage Report (NR 14) at the DC office.
- The DC checks completeness of the form.
- The DC signs and issues the acknowledgement slip to the couple.
- Certificate will be collected at registration point within 10 working days.
2.RELIGIOUS MARRIAGE
A. NOTIFICATION
- Parties to the marriage notify the religious institution of intention to marry.
- Parties present their National IDs for verification of particulars.
- The religious leader checks the eligibility of the parties to the marriage.
- The parties to marriage complete Notice of Marriage (Form B).
- Religious institution posts Form B on notice boards for 21 days or wherever is applicable.
- At the expiry of 21 days, the Religious Institution issues the Marriage Permit (Form D) to the parties if there are no caveats lodged against the marriage.
B. REGISTRATION
- The religious leader issues NR14 to the couple.
- The couple completes NR14.
- The religious leader checks and ensures completeness of NR14.
- The religious leader completes the details on the Acknowledgement Slip and affix signature and stamps it.
- Certificate will be collected at registration point within 10 working days.
3.CUSTOMARY MARRIAGE
A. NOTIFICATION
- Parties to the marriage notify the Traditional Authority (TA) in person of intention to marry.
- Parties to the marriage and witnesses to present their national IDs to the TA for verification of particulars
- Parties to marriage complete Form B.
- The TA checks completeness of Form B.
- The TA makes an entry of the notice in the Marriage Notice Book.
- The TA displays the notice for 21 days in a conspicuous place within his or her office premises.
- The TA issues Marriage Permit (Form D) to parties if no objection is raised after 21 days.
B. REGISTRATION
- The couple completes Marriage Report (NR 14).
- The TA checks completeness of NR14 Form.
- The TA completes the details on the Acknowledgement Slip and affix signature and stamps.
- The TA issues Acknowledgement Slip to the couple.
- Certificate will be collected at registration point within 10 working days.

Note:
- Each party to marriage must be resident in the district of marriage at least 15 days preceding notice of marriage.
- All foreigners will be required to present their Resident Foreigner ID from National Registration Bureau (NRB).
- Foreigners must present Letter of no Impediment from their countries.
