National ID / Residential Foreigner ID

The National ID is a legal identity document issued by the National Registration Bureau (NRB) to all eligible Malawian citizens. It facilitates access to public services, voting, banking and social protection programs in line with the National Registration Act (2010)

 Procedure:

  1. Applicant completes NR1 Form and provides any of the following as proof of citizenship:
    • Birth Certificate
    • Biological parent National ID (Parent must be present at registration point)
    • Two witnesses with National IDs who must be present at point of registration
  2. The Registration Officer checks the completeness of the NR1 form in all respects and verifies the authenticity of proof of citizenship documents.
  3. For late registration (after 30 working days upon turning 16 years of age), Registration Officer advises applicant to pay stipulated late registration fee.
  4. Registration Officer enters data provided on the NR1 form and captures biometrics of the applicant.
  5. Registration Officer pastes BRK receipt on the NR1 form and advises the applicant to bring the NR1 form when coming to collect ID after 30 working days.

  2. The Registration Officer checks the completeness of the NR1 form in all respects and verifies the authenticity of proof of citizenship documents.
  3. For late registration (after 30 working days after acquiring the citizenship here under), Registration Officer advises applicant to pay stipulated late registration fee.
  4. Registration Officer enters data provided on the NR1 form and captures biometrics of the applicant.Registration Officer pastes BRK receipt on the NR1 form and advises the applicant to bring the NR1 form when coming to collect ID after 30 days.

  2. The Registration Officer checks the completeness of the NR1 form in all respects and verifies the authenticity of proof of citizenship documents.
  3. For late registration (after 30 days after acquiring the citizenship here under), Registration Officer advises applicant to pay stipulated late registration fee.
  4. Registration Officer enters data provided on the NR1 form and captures biometrics of the applicant.
  5. Registration Officer pastes BRK receipt on the NR1 form and advises the applicant to bring the NR1 form when coming to collect ID after 30 days.

Procedure

Place of registration for resident foreigners is District Registration Office.

  1. Applicant completes NR2 Form and attaches any of the following as proof of residence as the case may be:
    • Permanent Residence Permit
    • Temporary Residence Permit
    • Business Residence Permit
    • Temporary Employment Permit
    • Student Permit
  1. Registration Officer checks completeness of the NR2 Form and verifies proof of permit.
  2. Registration Officer advises applicant to pay prescribed application fee
  3. For late registration (after 30 days upon acquiring the permit), Registration Officer advises applicant to pay stipulated late registration fee.
  4. Registration Officer authorizes in the Biometric Registration Kit for capture of biodata and biometrics of the applicant.
  5. Registration Officer enters data provided on the NR2 form and captures biometrics of the applicant.
  6. Registration Officer pastes BRK receipt on the NR2 form and advises the applicant to bring the NR2 form when coming to collect ID after 30 days.
